Bear with us as we transition to a slightly different format and get adjusted to it! We did kick it off in a big way with a special guest in the area. Big Moss rolled through with Chrome Vision and Divided and dropped a freestyle gem for the streets of Vancouver to roll with. Since the Urban Renewal Project is going in a new direction, separate from Co-Op Radio, we figured we'd go out with a bang and drop a TRIPLE SHOT on the people. The first two tracks were from Random Axe's LP, "Karate Kid" and "Everybody Nobody Somebody". Both go hard and if you're fans of any one of Sean Price, Guilty Simpson or Black Milk, you'll like this album very much. We also got into a track from a couple weeks ago that we slept on from Termanology's Cameo King II, ST Salute featuring Ea$y Money and H Blanco. Crazy track and the album is definitely worth checking out. Show Off!

We played a ton of tracks tonight, including cuts from Vast Aire, J. Cole, Artifacts, and 2Pac, whose birthday was June 16th. We also discovered (stay with me here) the human version of Louie Anderson's cartoon character from Life With Louie.. Weird, right?

URP Tuesdays -- June 7th, 2011 -- Randominium!

Once again it's on!

We pretty much got right into it, not only providing more scintillating conversation than Jeff Goldblum, but also the absolute best in Hip-Hop. Instead of doing a beat battle or double shot, we rocked the new Random Axe single, "Chewbacca". In other news, the name "Chewbacca" still receives the dreaded squiggly red typo line when typed in a Blogspot text box. This is a travesty, especially since I'm planning to name my second, fourth and twelfth child Chewbacca :-(. Anyhow, the Random Axe LP drops a week from today and we are all rather pumped on that fact.

We were also feeling the fact that Summer finally seems to be on its way to Vancouver. Better late than never, right? Thanks, Mother Nature. I guess you were busy reigning absolute terror on Asia, South America and the Caribbean. However, in all seriousness, people need to stop complaining about poor weather or the lack of sunshine we are getting here in North America, when millions of people have been killed, injured and displaced around the world because of natural disasters. Donate a few bucks to relief efforts and help your fellow man, even if it means having a couple less 8 dollar cups of coffee.

URP Tuesdays -- May 31, 2011 -- Feeling the Bass

We were back in full effect tonight, closing out the month of May in a positive way with our Double Shot of our choice cuts from the last 31 days. The Big M pick was Elzhi's version of Represent (surprise, surprise...), since it is a very tall order to go in on one of DJ Premier's best beats and not be outshined by Nas' mastery on Illmatic. Check the URP Facebook group to download "Elmatic" for free, you will not be disappointed! 2Face Al selected "Random Call" by Random Axe (Sean Price, Guilty Simpson & Black Milk), which gets us amped for the June 14th release of the Random Axe LP!

We were then joined by a veteran producer and Grammy winner, Chin, who has put down production for a laundry list of Hip-Hop artists including K'Naan, Drake, The Clipse, Eminem, 50 Cent and countless more. Chin will be in town this weekend (June 4th & 5th), hosting a Hip-Hop Production Masterclass at The Nimbus School of Recording Arts. Vancouver has been hosting many conventions such as this recently, which are a great way to gain valuable experience about the music industry. Young artists listen up!

We welcomed ourselves back to Co-Op Radio following last week's hiatus by bringing back the legendary, amazing, mythical, tantalizing DOUBLE SHOT! Will it remain? Will it return from whence it came? Only time will tell. Alls we know is that we churned out a couple of tracks for the people, coming from Edo G's new album, "Face In The Crowd". Another nice release from Edo G, who speaks to the Golden Era crowd on this record. "I Was There" and "Drink Up" were the tracks chosen to get your attention, now check out the rest of the album. URP Tuesdays -- R.I.P. Guru (July 17, 1961– April 19, 2010)

One year ago today, the world lost one of the most recognizable voices in Hip-Hop. Keith "Guru" Elam passed away on April 19th, 2010, following a heart attack and the ensuing coma. Never one to take a verse off, Guru needed no introduction when he picked up the microphone. In addition to dropping knowledge on every track he touched, it could be argued that he and DJ Premier were major players in shaping that New York Hip-Hop sound that ruled the airwaves in the 90s and into the 2000s. If, for some reason, you're not up on Guru and Gang Starr, do yourself a favour and look up him up.

We also gave some serious burn to one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Raekwon. The Chef will be rocking Fortune Sound Club on 4/20/2011, so it was only right that we got into a heavy dose of Wu tonight. If you've never seen any of the Wu-Tang members live, this is your chance to brush up on the live experience, as you can be sure that Rae will be dusting off the old classics as well as some of his newer work. Raekwon + Fortune Sound Club = one monstrous show.

We decided to get the ball rolling with the beat battle, as usual. This week's theme was our favourite tracks from a movie soundtrack. Narrowing it down to one track each was no easy task, but we did our best. The Big M pick of the night was a personal favourite that only a small handful of people will agree with, but whatever: Pandemonium by The Pharcyde, from King Of New York. 2Face Al picked Am I Black Enough For You by Schoolly D. With March winding down, we decided to kick off the show with a Big-M/2Face Al double shot of our favourite tracks from albums released this month. It was a good month for Hip-Hop, with Raekwon, Reks, Lupe Fiasco, Pharoahe Monch, Zion I & The Grouch, Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa dropping albums, among others. It was tough to narrow it down, but we went with Pharoahe Monch's "Clap (One Day)" featuring Showtyme & DJ Boogie Blind and "Race Against Time" by 1982 (Termanology & Statik Selektah) featuring Bun B & Josh Xanthus. URP Tuesdays -- Mad As Hell, And We're Not Gonna Take Anymore!

We got into quite a show tonight, and really threw a curveball and decided to place the beat battle at the end of the show. Swing, strike three, yerrrrrouttathere. This week's edition was not so much a battle as it was a mini-tribute to tack onto the end of Sage's impromptu Nate Dogg set from last week, when we learned of the DPG crooner's passing about midway through the program. We picked particular tracks involving Nate not based on popularity, but our personal tastes. The two selections were 213's "Run On Up" and "O.G." by Daz featuring Snoop Dogg & Nate Dogg. Take Action to Prevent Internet Data Charging - The Beginning

We are available on the airwaves and online. Most fans I converse with listen in online at www.coopradio.org. But one of my close friends does not have an internet connection on his computer, and tunes in through his iphone. I doubt he will ever do that again after a young couple in Merritt B.C was recently charged around 5,000 dollars for data they did not even use on their phones. CBC news reports that the couple received bills in the vicinity of a thousand dollars a month for data use they cannot explain. They are fed up with their treatment by Bell customer service and that is understandable. According to CBC news, Bell is one of Canada’s worst offenders when in comes to data based billing errors. If you have ever been a Bell or Solo Mobile customer, however, you don’t need CBC news to tell you that. If you have ever had a cellphone contract in this country, period, you don’t need CBC news to tell you that either. In fact, not only are Canadians paying some of the highest rates in the world for cellular service, they are also constantly get gouged by billing errors. One customer even had a bill for 15,000 dollars for what experts say cost the company only 4 dollars to provide! www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsffmLcEqPo

The time has come to make these companies accountable for their terrible and dishonest business practices. The chairman of the CRTC, Conrad Von Finckenstein, wanted to implement a system wherein telecomm companies could charge you for your internet based on usage, similar to the way cellphone data is billed. He rationalized this fascist, money grubbing initiative by asking why Canadians who only use the internet a little bit, should pay the same as Canadians who use it a lot. If this is how he rationalizes things, then why should Canadians who signed up for a contract three days later than another Canadian pay more because they missed a promotion? What is next? Is ICBC going to install cameras and tolls every 3 blocks on every street because “British Columbians who drive just a little bit should have to pay the same as British Columbians who drive more”?

There is a war going on outside, and no man or woman is safe from it. This war spans from the broccoli you twist up, to the broccoli you steam and eat. It spans from what you see, hear and read to what you breathe into your lungs. A new battle in this war has emerged in recent months and it takes place on the Internet. This Wikileaks fiasco can be looked at in two ways. First, they are a group of people who are committed to freedom of speech and human rights. Private Bradley Manning is facing multiple counts and is being held in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day because of his belief that people had the right to know what governments are doing. Wikileaks makes it all the more apparent how Internet usage is an inherent human right. Nobody should have the right to censor the Internet except for the most gruesome and ugly cases such as child exploitation. Nevertheless, our free and unmolested access to internet in the future is crucial to our society. The second way to look at Wikileaks, is that despite the honorable efforts of Julian Assange and company, they are being used as internet terrorists to justify a 9/11 style war on the internet and communications. “Ordo Ab Chaos” is the latin of: “Order through Chaos”. You create an event and use it to maintain order by changing the ways you were operating and by implementing a prepared series of changes to law. This is where we truly find ourselves on the brink. You create a scenario in which in its aftermath you have tightened your control. Big Telecom plays its part in this war.

If you can’t look at the bigger picture, at least look at what is clear as day in front of you. There is a federal election looming and our time has come to make all of these betrayers of the people accountable. It is possible to make this issue an election issue by making it your personal responsibility as a citizen of a free country. The will to act has become sluggish in recent memory. This is not in the spirit of Canada, and definitely not in the spirit of Hip Hop. Do we stand up for our rights?

What can we do? Make ourselves heard! Like the movie Network, we want you to get mad. We want you to get mad and say: “I ain't HAVING THAT!” SIGN THE PETITION AT: www.openmedia.ca Share the links they provide on Facebook. But it does not end there. We need to keep the pressure on them to fully ensure they actually do their jobs… but that is another issue. Will we change the world? Probably not. But even the smallest pebble hurled from the mountain top can accumulate mass and velocity until it is a giant snow ball of immovable righteousness.

George Orwell once said that “in a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” Chuck D said: “Fight the Power”. And finally, 2 Face Al once said: "Listen to Orwell and Chuck D".

URP Tuesdays -- March 15, 2010 -- Japan Love, RIP Nate Dogg

Before anything else, the Urban Renewal Project must encourage you to visit www.JapanLove.ca and help in any way you can. There are certain events that put things in perspective and make us realize the fortune we receive in comparison to other nations. Our donations go a long way.

As if the earthquakes weren't enough, we have just learned that Nate Dogg has passed away. Exact causes aren't known at this point but it's logical to assume the strokes he suffered within the last 4 years were a factor in the deterioration of his health. RIP Nathaniel "Nate Dogg" Hale (August 19, 1969 - March 15, 2011). He was only 41 years old.

We learned of Nate's passing partway through the show, so the only tunes that really mattered were the Nate Dogg jams... If for some reason you listen to us but don't know who he is, please google him. We shifted our focus towards an extensive Nate set as a tribute to an artist who was the definition of 'making your own lane'. His passing is a great tragedy that will be felt throughout the Hip-Hop community and beyond.

Broadcasting live from Columbia and Hastings in the heart of the vibrant Vancouver East Side!

Since today is International Women's Day, it was only right that the theme for tonight's Big M/TwoFace Al beat battle involved female MCs. There are way too many choices available for us to narrow it down to one track each, we know. Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Missy Elliot, Jean Grae, Rah Digga, Lauryn Hill, Lady Of Rage, Heather B, and the list continues. We each picked a track anyway though, for the sake of the sacred bit. The Big M selection was "Da B Side" by Da Brat (f/ Notorious BIG & Jermaine Dupri), while TwoFace Al chose Jean Grae's "Don't Rush Me". Both solid picks in our opinions, but don't fret because we got into an all-female MC set later in the show.

We've seen a lot of Charlie Sheen in the news lately, which inspired the theme for this week's beat battle: Drugs. More specifically, the adverse effects of drugs in multiple settings and situations. Don't expect us to pick Purple Pills or Drug Ballad. URP Radio is for the kiiiids.

TwoFace Al's pick was Like A Window by Dead Prez & The Outlawz, which deals with the strain drugs can put on the family environment. A solid choice, which relates to the Big M pick of the night, D-Rugs by Cam'ron featuring Brotha. We appreciate that Eminem and Dre have grown over the years and that as such, we shouldn't expect the Slim Shady LP Eminem, nor should we be prepared to hear Dr. Dre from The Chronic days. But aside from the fact that the video is full of more product placement than you can shake a bottle of Gatorade at. That being said, we got love for legends still putting music out for the new generation.

We were then joined by a true trailblazer in Canadian music, Masia One. In addition to being the first female artist to be nominated for a Much Music Video Award in the Rap category, she has worked with dope artists from Vancouver to Jamaica. Her work with Grammy-winning producer Che Vicious connected her with the likes of The RZA, Talib Kweli, The Game, Eminem and many more legendary artists. Masia One truly is a multi-faceted artist with a smooth sound and you would be wise to stay on the lookout for her to break out even moreso than she already has! Tonight the Urban Renewal Project got straight into the mix with some fire. Our pace was torrid on this night, as DJ Sage spun as many tracks as he could fit into our 2 hour time frame. The focus of the week is on our debate about whether or not we should be listing all of the live shows going on in the near future. The other side suggested that it was stupid idea and that I should shut up. Innovation is so persecuted in our society.

We kicked off this evening's show with the now legendary Battle of the Beats segment. Posse Cuts were front and center when we kicked off tonight's show with the legendary beat battle we've established. We felt we needed to go off the map a bit for this one and avoid picking the obvious choices (The Symphony, Affirmative Action, Scenario, Buddy, etc...) just to switch it up a little bit. The Big M pick of the night was Reservoir Dogs by Jay-Z featuring Sauce Money, Beanie Sigel and The L.O.X., while TwoFaceAl went with Therapy by The Alchemist featuring Blu, Kid Cudi, Talib Kweli and Evidence. We also bigged up a fallen soldier all night long with tons of classic tunes. We're referring to the late J Dilla, whose birthday was yesterday, February 7th. Even in a two hour program, we weren't able to get all of his best material in. If you aren't familiar with Dilla, we recommend getting on top of it and buying some of his music or even just scouring YouTube or something to understand just how many artists he blessed with top-notch production.

Our theme for this week's Beat Battle revolves around the songs about the ladies. We're not talking about throwing an R. Kelly (no disrespect) type crooner and spitting elementary rhymes about fat kids and cakes. We're referring to those tracks that you aren't embarrassed to bump while you're by yourself in the car or on the train. Our choices were pretty obvious, but the tracks were too dope to overlook. You probably could have guessed 'Renee' by The Lost Boyz, as well as 'You're All I Need' by Method Man f/ Mary J Blige, but hey, at least it gives us an opportunity to play these classics on a Tuesday night. Honorable mention to Mos Def's 'Ms. Fat Booty', Masta Ace's 'Brooklyn Masala' and half of LL Cool J's entire catalogue.

With the womanly theme fresh in our minds, we were joined by Brooklyn duo, M-Tri and Leecy T. She's the DJ, he's the rapper. M-Tri also works with The Sleepwalkas, whose recent single, 'Rhyme Flow' featuring Sadat X, was near the top of our 2010 charts. We set the tone of tonight's show by getting into another edition of the Battle of the Beats, with the theme of speed. More specifically, driving quickly (in a closed course with professional tutelage, of course).

The Big M pick was originally going to be One Forty by Nappy Roots, but due to format issues with the file (damn you iTunes and your .m4a format), we were unable to get it cued up. Instead, I settled on Speed by DJ Quik. While the subject matter isn't velocity-focused, the instrumental and rhyme flow will have you pressing down on the accelerator if you listen to it in a car. 2Face Al's pick was drawn from personal experience, as he has cruised at high (but completely safe) speeds to They Don't Know by Freeway and The Jacka. Next time you make a playlist for your wheels, make sure to include these tracks!

URP Tuesdays -- Makin' Statements

Once again it's on...

We started the show by acknowledging MLK day (Monday). Even though it is an American holiday, Martin's words and actions have influenced and benefitted populations around the world.

Addressing audiences was a characteristic that MLK worked to perfection. If there was one thing he could do as well as or better than anyone, it was conveying his messages through eloquent and inspiring speeches. It is with this in mind that we got into the second edition of the Beat Battle (still working on a better name for that). This week's theme was 'Statement Tracks'. Rappers often put out a track to put the game on notice. Royce Da 5'9 said it best on his statement track, "Boom": "When I spit, you don't eat, you don't breathe, you don't miss a f***in' line". My pick this week was Joell Ortiz's "Battle Cry", while 2Face Al selected "Built For This" by Cormega. What do you think?

Mentioning Vanilla Ice's upcoming album also stirred up a little trip down memory lane. If you haven't seen his classic film, "To The Extreme", do yourself a favour and pick it up wherever terrible motion pictures are distributed.

We were also blessed with an exclusive new track from Vancity's Finest, Jay Kin, who called in near the end of the show to drop "Japan Love" on us. Do we really need to tell you that it's dope? Hit JayKin up and let him know what you think.

What's up cold world?

We braved the elements this week in order to bring some funk to your eardrums. As usual, we delivered and are once again revered as kings among men. No big deal.

However, it was due to those same elements that we had to forego the Double Shot and get right into the mix. The Double Shot may be in the process of being phased out in favour of a new bit in the next couple of weeks. Don't worry though, we'll still play choice cuts off all the newest and best in Hip-Hop.

Case in point, we featured the brand spankin' new cut from Freeway & Statik Selektah's 24-hour EP, "Statik-Free". It's called "From The Street" and features Lil Fame of MOP and Termanology, and yes, it is crazy. "Statik-Free" comes out any second now. We're back in the spot for 2011! Same dope formula, new year!

We kicked off the new year with a Double Shot from new EP from Termanology & Statik Selektah, collectively known as 1982. It's entitled The Evening News and is most likely tracks that didn't quite make the cut for their LP, released a few months ago. We joked that the tracks were throw-aways, but that 1982 throw-aways were better than most rappers' albums. While it is only 8 tracks long, it is a good grab on iTunes for the price! Check it out for sure.

We got into our favourite albums of 2010, with Freeway & Jake One's The Stimulus Package, The Roots' How I Got Over, Nas & Damien Marley's Distant Relatives, Termanology & Statik Selektah's 1982 and Rustee Juxx & Marco Polo's The Execution topping the URP list. Honorable mention to Curren$y's Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk II.

We're back earlier than expected! Our tunes warrior, DJ Sage, was taking the night off so it was on us to hold it down this week. All we did was throw down a YouTube DJ set for the ages. No big deal.

We kicked off with a Double Shot from an album that actually came out already but that we didn't get to for some reason, Ghostface Killah's Apollo Kids, courtesy of Def Jam Records. Another solid release from Pretty Toney, but is that really a surprise? There are definitely some gems on this album, which features Method Man, Joell Ortiz, Redman, Raekwon and several more. You never get bored listening to a Ghostface album, that's for sure.

We then accosted the airwaves with everything you can imagine, with a fairly eclectic mix to close out 2010!

The transitions were a little rough but we still dropped some Ghostface, Saukrates, Rascalz, Jeff Spec, Sean Price, Big L, Guru, and even some Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz on ya.

It's been a very solid year for Hip-Hop releases, don't let the Young Money takeover fool you! Although even that camp had some solid releases. Big up to Drake!

We were joined with an MC who has paid more dues than most in the music business: Saigon. He has found a home with Suburban Noize Records and surrounded himself with quality movers and shakers and as a result, his debut LP will finally see the light of day! The Greatest Story Never Told is scheduled to hit shelves on February 15th, 2011! We discussed this project, which features Just Blaze, Swizz Beatz, Faith Evans, Devin The Dude and many more, as well as his work with Statik Selektah, and of course, why everything that glitters ain't gold. Urban Renewal Project for December 7th 2010 -- DIGGIN' IT!

Once again, it was on and we got right into it by featuring a track from the new Redman - Reggie mixtape, along with the new DJ Premier presents: Year Round Records - Get Used To Us.

Both mixtapes feature a lot of tracks that heavier hip hop heads have already heard, but they are still dope nonetheless. We also came through with our last song of the night and made in a world premiere as we showcased the unreleased Tre Nyce ft. Capone - Money Over Here track. Keep your ears peeled for Tre Nyce as we have it on good authority that BIG THINGS are planned for 2011. We look forward to that.

We got into all sorts of heat blazing the city's speakers with some Joell Ortiz, Redman, Saukrates, Tru Paz and more. Best believe DJ Sage was on point as always. Shoutout to Big M who was missing this week due to injury. He saved a busload of small children from a fire caused by music industry A&Rs who also wielded laser beams and blue-tooth headsets.

We're back again, after a one-week hiatus!

We didn't miss a beat this week, other than the fact we didn't do a Double Shot. We just got right into the music and let the music speak for itself! Props to anyone who checked out J. The man who we credit for pulling the Wu back together with his solo debut, "No Said Date", has another solid release under his belt even though not all the tracks are new. Another solid Tuesday in the books...

We featured a much anticipated album from a pair of URP favourites, Termanology and producer Statik Selektah, collectively known as 1982. The self titled album is serious business, as is to be expected from these two artists. Statik is always on point with the production, while you'd have to look pretty hard to find a lame Termanology verse. Some solid features on this one, including Xzibit, Bun B, MOP, and Inspectah Deck and more share the mic with Term and definitely make this album one of the must-cop discs of the year. We had to give some longtime Wu affiliates some shine this week, featuring a double shot from "One Man Army", the new album from Killarmy's 9th Prince which just came out courtesy of Babygrande. This is a good one for the dedicated Wu faithful, as he sticks with the style that made the Clan so successful. Features include the RZA, Kinetic, Outline and a few more. Since Kurupt's gonna be putting on a show, it was only natural to an extended DPG set that definitely brought back some memories... URP Tuesdays -- DJ D-Sharp interview and more

We got it in this week, featuring another solid release from Duck Down Records. "Live From The Tape Deck" is a collaborative album courtesy of producer !llmind and Skyzoo. Skyzoo, !llmind and Duck Down Records are all favourites of the Urban Renewal Project so it's really no surprise that we chose to feature this album over others that were released today. We weren't disappointed by any means, enjoying the disc that boasts features from Styles P, Buckshot, Sean Price, Torae and more. Check this out if you're a fan of Duck Down's catalogue, and good music in general!

After burning up the airwaves for a little bit, we got into a telephone interview with DJ D-Sharp, who was calling from and representing the Hip-Hop hotbed that is Oakland, California. Once playing the background and cutting and producing for other artists, Sharp has come to the forefront and currently has a nice EP ("Definition Of A Star") available now and it is definitely worth checking out. Oh yeah, did we mention it's free? Well, it is. We discussed being in the forefront, support, co-signigning, hip-hop politics and of course, the album, throughout the course of the interview and you won't want to miss that either! We kicked it off once again by featuring what is reportedly Slum Village's final studio album. The group has had its fair share of hardship over the years, losing the legendary producer J. Dilla in February of 2006, and Baatin in July of 2009. Nonetheless, they have written the group's final chapter with Villa Manifesto. Both Baatin and Dilla make posthumous appearances on this very good album that deserves to be supported. Make sure you check this disc out or you will be stuck regretting not knowing what's what!

DJ Quickie Mart was first up to bat tonight, chatting with us live from New Orleans. The producer/DJ has been making big moves bouncing back and forth from NO to LA, working with Freddie Gibbs, Gotham Green and many more but took the time out of his schedule to chop it up with us! We discussed the struggles facing New Orleans in the light of the BP oil spill, old school samples, the Haze series and more! We are broadcasting LIVE from a sweatbox studio on another Tuesday night! We dove right into a double shot from Rakaa's new album, Crown Of Thorns, available today! We had the Dilated Peoples MC on the show a couple weeks back, and he promised a heater of an album and did not disappoint! We've been spinning some cuts from the album in the past month or so and the project is solid! Definitely check this one out ASAP.

Following a short mix, we were joined by a friend of the show, the outspoken Toronto MC by the name of D-Sisive. D has been making some big moves in the past few years, including collaborations with Saukrates and releasing albums at a fast pace. We discussed his new disc, Vaudeville, his liasons with West coast artists such as Moka Only and The Sweatshop Union, his unique and artistic approach to Hip-Hop and the renewed appreciation he has received since making his return to music.
